Research on the project is based on three interrelated subprojects:
1. Geometrical Roots of Structuralism: The aim here is to investigate several methodological innovations in geometrical research between 1860 and 1910 that led to a ‘structural turn’ in the discipline.
2. Early Mathematical Structuralism: The aim here is to compare different philosophical theories of mathematical structuralism formulated between 1900 and 1940 against the background of these geometrical developments.
3. New Foundations for Structuralism: Building on the previous historical investigations, the aim here is to propose several new approaches to the conceptual and logical foundations of mathematical structuralism.
